Basket Swamp Community Hike
On August 14 the Tiverton Public Library and Tiverton Land Trust co-sponsored an evening discovery walk in Basket Swamp. We found a variety of fungi and learned about native plants from walk-leader Annie Bayer. As always, it was wonderful to be among a group of curious learners. A personal highlight of the walk was finding a plant that I've since learned is rare in Rhode Island, and possibly not documented in Newport County. The plant is found from eastern Canada, down the eastern seaboard, and on into Texas, so it is not a threatened species. But to find a plant that is rare in Rhode Island was a thrill. In the spring when it flowers I will confirm its identity with the RI Natural Heritage Program, but for now it will remain anonymous. I've since returned to Basket Swamp and found an array of newly fruiting fungi in various colors, shapes, and sizes. I encourage you to get on the trail to see what you can discover and look for more group hikes with TLT.
